Keynote: Youth Mental Illness: From Darkness to Light

In an effort to build awareness of the mental health crisis facing children, adolescents and young adults in the US, the filmmakers of the upcoming documentary titled Hiding in Plain Sight: Youth Mental Illness will be joined by a patient featured in the film to discuss the background of the film and the importance of sharing this information with the public.

Speakers:

Ken Burns, Executive Producer *pre-recorded
Maclayn Clark, Patient
Mary Clark, Mother
Christopher Loren Ewers, Co-Director and Director of Photography
Erik Ewers, Co-Director and Editor

About the Film:
Longtime WETA production partner Ken Burns is the executive producer of a major new public television documentary, Hiding in Plain Sight: Youth Mental Illness. The film, premiering in June 2022, gives voice to the experiences of young people who struggle with mental health challenges and focuses on the importance of awareness and empathy. Premieres June 27 & 28 9/8c on PBS.

The documentary will shine a clear —and sometimes stark —light on what it is like for youth as well as for the parents, teachers, friends and healthcare providers who try to help. Just as society has rallied around people with cancer and efforts for a cure, it is time to rally around children and adolescents who suffer mental health disorders —to see it as our common struggle, not somebody else’s problem. The first in a three-film series from the Ewers brothers on mental health.

Erik Ewers and Christopher Loren Ewers are the co-directors, Julie Coffman is the producer, and David Blistein is the writer. The four-hour film is part of the Well Beings Youth Mental Health Project.
